Shillong, Meghalaya’s capital, is a beautiful city surrounded by pine trees. It takes its name from Shillong Peak’s Lei Shillong, a local deity. Umiam Lake is a beautiful man-made reservoir located 15 kilometers north of Shillong, Meghalaya’s capital. The dam that was built to generate hydroelectric power resulted in the creation of the lake. The mesmerizing Umiam Lake is surrounded by the lush green East Khasi hills, which offer one of the best panoramic views in the country for nature enthusiasts. 

The sunrise over the lake is breathtaking and should not be missed. A park that is famous for picnics and frequented by locals looking for a respite from their stressful schedules borders Umiam Lake.

Elephant Falls

Elephant Falls, near Shillong, is one of the most popular falls in the North-East, named for an elephant-like stone at its base. The falls are divided into three tiers, each accessible from a different vantage point, making it a tourist’s delight. Because of an elephant-shaped mountain on one side of the waterfall, the British named it Elephant Falls.

The stone, however, disintegrated and was swept away after an earthquake in 1897. Elephant Waterfalls is a wonderful place to spend some time in nature while capturing priceless pictures for your memento.

The bustling market attracts both shoppers and foodies.

Shillong Peak

Shillong Peak is the city’s highest point, rising 6449 feet or 1965 meters above sea level. Amazing views of the city, the Himalayas, and the Bangladesh lowlands are all provided by the peak. Tourists can get a bird’s eye view by using a telescope. It is strongly suggested to hike up to this semi-circular Shillong Peak for the best views, but dense fog often prevents this.

    I’m trying to figure out if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi its fine from our end we have checked through various users might be there is poor internet speed/ downloading speed because of which you are not able to see the images you can try refreshing the page or clearing the cookies
