Aurobindo Ashram

Aurobindo Ashram, located in Pondicherry’s White Town, is named after its founder, Sri Aurobindo Ghosh. The foundation of this ashram was laid on November 24, 1926, when he retired from politics and settled in Pondicherry, surrounded by his disciples from all over the world.

This ashram was founded with the intention of assisting people in attaining moksha and inner peace. The majority of visitors from all over the country visit the ashram to gain spiritual knowledge and experience. The ashram by far is one of the richest in the world.

Furthermore, the ashram has no branches and only exists in Pondicherry. The day this ashram was established is recognized as the founding day of the ashram, which Sri Aurobindo described in his writings as “less created than grown around me as its center.” Mirra Alfassa, an Aurobindo disciple, was instrumental in the establishment of the ashram. She took care of the Aurobindo Ashram shortly after Sri Aurobindo Ghosh’s death in 1950 and was known as the ashram’s ‘Mother.’

Arikamedu Pondicherry

Arikamedu, a half-hour drive from the French colonial town of Pondicherry, is an ancient Roman trade center obscured from the eyes and ears of ordinary Tamil tourism. It was named after the Tamil word ‘Arikanmedu,’ which means ‘eroding mount.’ There is little known about any Indo-Roman ties in the Before Christ era, but extensive proofs were unearthed with the discovery and excavation of Arikamedu.

From the first century BC to the second century AD, this port town was occupied by Romans, Cholas, and French, and it was a well-known maritime center. Arikamedu’s glass bead manufacturing factory is known as the “Mother of All Bead Centers in the World.”The first excavations in Arikamedu were conducted in the 1940s, and they have continued ever since.

Sir Mortimer Wheeler’s institution was the most inspiring of these. The town currently consists of only two perpendicular walls that have been left open and the French Jesuit Mission House, which was built in the 18th century. In addition, mango and coconut trees can be found in this area. The site also contains numerous amphorae bearing the marks of Roman schools such as VIBII, Camuri, and IITA.

Arikamedu began as a fishing village and was later transformed into a brick-built harbor town. This occurred as the trade began to grow. The ruins of the so-called famous port city can still be found today.

Aside from maritime trade, the city conducts domestic trade with Kaveripattinam, Alagankulam, Musiri, and Suttukeni. Wines in amphora jars, cups, and plates made of red Roman clay pots, olive oil, and ceramic products are among the imports in the port town.

The months of October to March are the best months to visit Arikamedu because the weather is mild. Because it is not a frequently visited location, the site may not be on the map routes of travel agencies. So, if you want, you can hire a car for this purpose separately. You can use GPS to guide the driver if he does not know the exact location. It is only 4 kilometers from Pondicherry and will not take long, but finding the gate may be difficult.

Pondicherry Lighthouse

The Lighthouse is among Pondicherry’s most notable landmarks. Pondy, the French Riviera of the East, has two lighthouses, one old and one new. Whereas the former is no longer open to the public, the latter provides visitors with an incredible bird’s eye view of the city.

pondicherry tourism

During the nineteenth century, the only landmark for mariners arriving in Puducherry/Pondicherry was the Red Hills, which were located 3 kilometers west of town. The French intended to construct a lighthouse to provide visitors from the sea with a clear view. Following this, the old lighthouse was built in March 1836 under the supervision of L. Guerre. After years of operation, it was discontinued in 1979. The current Lighthouse, which is one of Pondicherry’s most popular attractions, was built the same year. The 157-foot-tall tower hosts a variety of cultural events, music festivals, and commercial activities.

With the passage of time, the difference in architecture between the two has become quite noticeable. The new lighthouse’s foundation is a two-story circular structure rather than a simple rectangular one. Not to mention the fact that the former one was much shorter than the one we see today. Despite their differences, both have been an important part of the city tour. After the older one was deactivated, the one that now stands tall was able to gain a lot of fame. As a result, you may notice a lot of foot traffic over here. To add to that, it’s a great place to take some amazing photos, so keep your camera ready.
