Home to our beloved president Mr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, connected with the mainland of India by the famous Pamban bridge and having a mention in the mythological Hindu epic, Ramayana, Rameshwaram needs no introduction.
This town, which is located at the tip of the Indian peninsula is of great significance to the Hindus as it is part of the pilgrimage of the Char Dhams. It is also a big tourist puller because of its natural beauty, the pleasant climate in the months of November to March, and the kaleidoscope of colors.
I am sure you might be intrigued by now. So without further ado, let me take you to the best places to visit when you are in Rameshwaram.
Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple
This is the temple where a God worshiped a God. This temple is said to be built by Lord Ram and is one of the twelve jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was expanded by the rulers of the Pandya dynasty in the 12 century who are responsible for the current structure of the temple. It is a divine hub for the Vaishnavite and Shiva sects of Hindus. This temple constitutes a major part of the spiritual tourism destination of India. The Dravidian-style architecture of this temple is a perfect example of architectural excellence. Today’s Ramanathaswamy
Temple houses the longest temple corridor in the world, which is 197 meters long and 133 meters broad and stands with 1200 massive granite columns. The main attraction is the Sand Mound, a lingam created by God Rama’s wife, Sita. When you are in Rameshwaram don’t miss out on visiting this temple otherwise it won’t justify this trip
Agnitheertham
Rameshwaram is the land of peace and piousness, houses 64 theertham(holy water bodies). But agnitheertham is considered to be the most important of them all. The reason is it is believed that Lord Rama himself took a bath at this agnitheertham to absolve him from the sin of killings in the war against Ravana.
The devotees take their first dip at the agnitheertham to emancipate themselves of all impurities and with the sins washed off they move to other teeraths. If visiting agnitheertham, I would suggest choosing the morning because the pure air of the ocean and the scene of the rising sun would be the most exhilarating experience.
The Five Faced Hanuman Temple
Yet again Rameshwaram houses something that cannot be found elsewhere. It is the five-face Hanuman temple. The deity has 5 faces namely Lord Hanuman, Lord Adivaraha, Lord Narasimha, Lord Hayagriva, and Lord Garuda. The idol is carved from a large ethogram stone from which vermilion is derived. The temple also enshrines the statue of Lord Ram, Goddesses Sita, and Lord Laxman.
It is believed that the actual souls of the Gods are supposed to have been put into the idols and this gives a very mystic feel to it. But the object that drives most of the tourists here is a floating stone outside the temple. It is believed to be the same stone that was used to build the bridge on the sea as prescribed by Hindu mythology.
Dhanushkodi
Welcome to the endpoint of India, Dhanushkodi. It is a small town at the southeastern tip of Pamban Island in Tamil Nadu. If you are curious to discover the plot of Ram Sethu, don’t forget to explore this place. It was once a thriving port surrounded by shallow beaches and vast horizon of the azure sea but now all remains is a vast ruin of historical past. You will get to see beautiful sunrises and sunsets here so do pay a visit.
